WORLD WE IMAGINE PART 1
Although we all seem like a spec
on the world, it is still possible for all of us to make a lasting difference.
Jacqueline Novogratz's The Blue Sweater demonstrates the
impact that just single person can have on the world. The story details her
travels to Africa and accounts the poverty, unequal rights, and overall
devastation that most are unaware of. The world is not an equal place for all
but can be changed through each of our contributions.
I have always been interested
in documentaries. They are meant to tell a story, always non-fiction, and
usually about a popular or controversial topic. They contain a lot of emotion
and evoke some type of reaction from the viewer. For instance, there nature
ones about zebras and exposes about Jeffrey Epstein, but both evoke a reaction
whether it be awe or disgust. Personally, I more interested in the latter and
have watched most if not all of them on Netflix. Considering the popularity of
Netflix and the effect that their documentaries have had, I think a it is great first step towards change.
It's challenging to accept a
shared accountability for human values without everyone knowing what it truly
going on out there. Although world news is publicly available, not everyone
reads it or really bothers to search it out. Since it does not directly affect
us, it might not be at the top of our minds. So instead, I think creating a
documentary about the different types of inequality all over the world can
expose those unaware to the tragedy that many face everyday. The first part can
take place in the US. It would serve as shock to the viewer seeing inequality
right at there doorstep. We can hope to explore all sorts of inequalities and
challenge them through the help of viewers. Media can have a snowball effect
that I hope would eventually be able to help those captured in the
documentary.
Hi Alex, I think this is a really good start. Documentaries are also an interest of mine, and I believe they are super important, especially because they include not only interviews with people in specific situations, but they also show the reality of the world. I think you should narrow it down and focus on a certain topic, (whether it be environmental or social), and then decide from there how you are going to go about creating these docs. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea Alex. I am a huge fan of documentaries too and I agree that they can be more powerful than the regular news. Is there a specific inequality in the world that you really are passionate about or something that affects your or your loved ones? I think that would make the best topic for your first documentary.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex, I really like this idea. I think a good way to make the next step is sharing stories of those that are already out. Bring more awareness to other stories of inequities and get statements from them. Then you could grow to the bigger picture of a documentary around the US and the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex, it seems like we had very similar responses to this post prompt. I am also very interested in documentary filmmaking as a medium to broadcast global inequalities. I am curious to know whether you are interested in creating a documentary TV series (with each episode covering a new issue), or if you were thinking to create a few separate documentary films?
